One of the ways to reduce your child’s screen time is to ask yourself, the parent, a couple of fundamental questions:
1) Seek for alternatives: Imagine that you have no TV, computer or video games at home, what else could your child do when she is bored?
When you come up with some ideas, suggest them to your child when the time comes. Similarly at a time when the child is not near the tv, encourage her to come up with things she likes to do in addition to watching tv that she can do instead,
2) Embrace the human connection: Remember that when your child is bored it is her way of seeking attention and a connection with another human being or with herself. Your job as a parent is to support your child is finding this connection.
What are some of the ways you can do this?? It can be offering an imaginary play topic like school or being a doctor, it can be offering to play a board game or read with your child, going to the park or to the pool etc…
Turning to the TV, Computer and similar activities is the easiest solution and a bad habit we are all used to. This solution is harming the connection between yourself and your child but most importantly between the child and herself.
